Hyrox Boston: The Definitive Race & Training Guide (2026)
Hyrox Boston race guide - venue, course intel, cold-weather gear list, 12-week training plan, and where to train across greater Boston.
Hyrox Boston: The Definitive Race & Training Guide
Hyrox Boston is the Northeast’s flagship Hyrox stop - running culture, marathon city, and a Hyrox community that takes its racing seriously. This guide covers the venue, the course, the gear that handles New England weather (cold pre-race, sweat-soaked mid-race), and a 12-week plan to peak when the gun goes off.
What is Hyrox? (skip if you know)
Hyrox is a global indoor fitness race: 8 stations of functional work - sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer’s carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls, SkiErg - separated by 1km runs. Same format every event, same standards everywhere.
Hyrox Boston 2026 - the basics
| Date | October 8–11, 2026 (race weekend) |
| Venue | Boston Convention & Exhibition Center (BCEC), Seaport District |
| Categories | Pro Men, Pro Women, Open Men, Open Women, Doubles, Relay |
| Capacity | ~3,000 |
| Registration | Opens ~5 months out at hyroxworld.com |
Boston has a particular character on the Hyrox calendar:
- Strong runner field. Boston is a marathon city - many local Hyrox athletes are sub-3:30 marathoners. The 1km runs in Boston tend to be relatively faster than the median field. Plan accordingly.
- Cold-to-warm transition. If the race is winter, you’ll arrive cold, warm up in cold, then sweat through 60–90 minutes of work. Layering matters more here than at most US events.
- Tight venue access. Seaport / convention area parking is limited and pricey. Public transit (T) is the move.
The course
Hyrox publishes the official course layout about 2 weeks before the event. Boston-specific:
- Run distance. Convention floor laps are typically 1.05–1.10km on a watch.
- Sled surface. The BCEC has historically used rubberized matting - fast.
- Bag-check + warmup space. Boston venues are notably tight on warm-up space - get there early or warm up in your hotel before walking to the venue.
Travel + race-day logistics
Where to stay
If the venue is BCEC (Seaport): stay in Seaport for walkability. Otherwise the nearest T station is your friend - Boston public transit is fast and cheap relative to Uber surge on race morning.
The Seaport Hotel Boston, Aloft Boston Seaport District, and Element Boston Seaport District are all a short walk from the BCEC. The Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport is a step up, also nearby.
Race-day morning
- Arrival: 2 hours pre-wave (Boston security/bag-check is strict)
- Parking: BCEC garages run about $35–45/day. Take the T instead - the Silver Line stops right at the BCEC.
- Eating: last solid meal 2.5–3 hours pre-race
- Cold-weather warm-up: if winter race, do your warm-up in your hotel or a heated venue ante-room. Don’t try to warm up cold near the bag check - you’ll be stiff at the start
Spectators
Spectator passes typically run $30–50 in Boston - slightly higher than other US stops. The Boston crowd is knowledgeable and loud - many are Hyrox athletes themselves coming to scout the course before their own wave.
Gear list for Hyrox Boston
Shoes
- Reebok Nano X4 - the default Hyrox shoe.
- Nobull Canvas Trainer Plus - durable.
- Nike Metcon 9 - best sled-push grip.
Boston-specific note: for winter races, the Nano X4’s warmer upper is more comfortable than the canvas-feeling Nobull. The Metcon is fine indoors but the tighter mesh feels stuffy by station 6 in long sessions.
Race-day kit (winter Boston)
- Compression shorts under longer-leg warm-up pants you can shed at bag check
- Long-sleeve technical base layer - race in this if it’s a cold venue. Most Boston Hyrox athletes race in a short-sleeve and regret it by station 1.
- Warm walk-in jacket for getting to the venue (bag-check before warm-up)
- Grip socks, high cuff
- LMNT electrolytes - cold venues still strip electrolytes; don’t skip
- Hand-warmer packets in your jacket pockets if winter
Underrated
- Lifting gloves - cold hands grip worse on the sled and wall ball
- A second pair of dry shoes for the walk back to your hotel (Boston winter + wet shoes = misery)
12-week training plan to peak for Hyrox Boston
Weeks 1–4: aerobic base + station familiarization
- 1km easy runs + 50% race-weight sled push/pull
- Build sandbag-lunge volume to 50 unbroken reps by week 4
- If you’re a Boston-area runner, don’t over-rely on running fitness. Hyrox punishes runners who skip strength work - your sled push will drag.
Weeks 5–8: race-pace blocks
- Two weekly mini-sims (4 stations + 4 runs at 80%)
- Transition block
- One long run for aerobic base (Boston runners - you’ll already have this; don’t add more)
Weeks 9–11: full simulations
Two full sims, one per week. If your Boston race is cold, do at least one sim in cool conditions to practice managing layers (start clothes, mid-race sweat, post-race cool-down).
Week 12: taper
Three light sessions, full mobility, sleep. Don’t introduce anything new.
Logging is half the win. Hyrox Training Logbook for the 12-week arc.
Local Hyrox training across greater Boston
Affiliate gyms with full competition equipment - Concept2 SkiErgs, official wall-ball weights, and real Hyrox sleds - change season to season. Use the official directory for the current list:
Find a HYROX gym near you → - search your city on the official site.
Boston has a high density of CrossFit boxes that have most Hyrox equipment even if not affiliated. If you live north or west of the city (Cambridge, Brookline, Medford, Newton), training locally is easy.
The Northeast Hyrox IG community (#hyroxboston) hosts open-court training sessions periodically - worth following.
What to do this week if you’re racing Hyrox Boston
- Confirm registration + category - Boston sells out fast
- Book a hotel near the venue (Seaport or T-accessible)
- Order missing gear (especially if cold-weather race - base layers take time to dial in)
- Start logging every session
- Read the course preview ~2 weeks out
